Remembering Skylar

(feline companion to K9 Rescue Me
Photographer & Calendar Artist)

August 1, 1989 - August 8, 2008

I have been a volunteer and the K9 Rescue Me photographer since it was founded by Jen Ego. She asked for my help and I could not say no.

My love for my fur kids has been the reason why I love my work with rescue. I am the proud owner of 3 dogs and as of recently I had 2 cats. One of whom has been with me, so it seems, since the beginning of time ...

I understand that K9 Rescue Me focuses on canine rescue and helping dogs in need ... still it is important that we remember all our fur kids ... I'd like to think that no matter how much time we have with each and every one of these kids, we have to do our best to keep them safe, happy, healthy and most importantly loved ...

It always makes me sad when I read about all the canine companions that I post on here as I am the webmaster for K9 Rescue Me too... It makes me even more sad when some of these beloved ones did not get the chance to be with their owners/family for long ...

So, it is with profound sadness that I share with you that my feline champion has been laid to rest. Just as the opening ceremonies of the Olympics marveled the world with parades of athletes and country flags, Skylar's closing ceremonies took place at the same time. Afterall, she was a Greek / Canadian bilingual kitty ... how weirdly appropriate.

I helped her carry her torch to the Stairway to Heaven... She didn't have to buy a Stairway to Heaven - she earned it... her torch will continue to burn endlessly without flaw.

A tribute to my best friend... the love of my life, my loyal companion, who had not an ounce of selfishness in her body. Who was there for me for 19 years of my life... good or bad... we went through it all together.

She taught me a lesson of acceptance - then again she has taught me more than that ... and she showed that time and again when she accepted the dogs as part of her kingdom...

Although we are a house full of animals, the house feels empty ...

The song "I'M ALREADY THERE" - LONESTAR played on the radio just as I turned the car on to drive home ...

Some of the lyrics:

I'm already there
Don't make a sound
I'm the beat in your heart
I'm the moonlight shining down
I'm the whisper in the wind
And I'll be there until the end
Can you feel the love that we share
Oh I'm already there

We may be a thousand miles apart
But I'll be with you wherever you are

She was brought home in "MY" Toronto Maple Leaf Jersey (#16 Ed Olczyk) all those years ago, and left with "HER" Toronto Maple Leaf Jersey ... she was wrapped in it and will be cremated with it ...

"The great love affair" is truly a love story about how a girl and a kitten bonded 19 years ago ... and with that love gave me the desire to want to love others - that is why I am a dog owner as well and a reason why I volunteer ...

"Came but for friendship - took away love..."

Thank you to everyone who thought of us in this very fast change of venues. Skylar just celebrated her 19th birthday, at least I was honoured to have had her in my life this long... could I really ask any more of her... she gave me her all... her everything...

She was my girl... so much like me I almost think we shared a soul... Achilles (feline buddy) will miss you... Paxton will miss you dearly, so will Jaye and Mystic (all canine buddies) ...

I can only wish that my canine kids will live a long life... but we never know do we? We just have to give it our all every moment we can ... and I will continue my work with K9 Rescue Me for years to come and be proud ...

I read the story of Farley's life - who is on the next page (click here) before creating the page for him to post on this website... what an extraordinary little one... as are all the others that are remembered here... let us all bow our heads down to each and every one of them... may we all meet again at the end of the rainbow bridge...
